Music, film, a "fiery" fundraiser, a downtown walking tour and more this week. Here's the scoop:

Gaelic Storm

While the Titanic sank in 1997 (well, in the movie), Gaelic Storm rose to the top and found great touring success after their song, “An Irish Party in Third Class,” became an instant hit (because who wouldn’t want to dance like Leo and Kate in the underbelly of a ship?). Their latest album, “Chicken Boxer,” was released just a couple weeks ago, on July 31. Doors open at 8 p.m. Show starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are on sale at ticketfly.com. $20-$25. Wooly’s, 504 E. Locust St. Go to woolysdm.com.

I'm super pumped for the Iowa State Fair, which kicks off this Thursday. There are plenty of other fun things to do as well - here are a few:

Iowa State Fair

The theme, “Nothing Compares,” sums up the plethora of music, entertainment, animals, shows, contests, foods, attractions, games and more you can experience at the 11-day event. Start planning your time at our state’s biggest event, which includes performances from Miranda Lambert, The Band Perry, Hank Williams Jr., Journey and others on the Grandstand, carnival rides, yodeling and mullet contests, the butter cow, the Super Bull, the Sky Glider and more.

Friday: Sorry everyone, this show has been canceled due to a scheduling conflict. Refunds will be issued to the cards used to purchase tickets. Read more in Joe's music blog.

Adel Sweet Corn Festival

Saturday: Stuff yourself with Iowa’s sweetest summer treat at Adel’s annual Sweet Corn Festival. Volunteers will shuck more than seven tons of sweet corn Friday night, which will then be served for free all day Saturday, to be enjoyed along with other vendor foods, live music and a beer garden. The day kicks off with the Adel Sweet Corn Festival 5K, which begins at 8 a.m. After the run, head to the town square for a parade. The festival is held in downtown Adel, 10th and Main streets. Go to adelpartners.org.

Matisyahu

His first single, “King Without a Crown,” was a top 40 hit in 2004, and he has since released three studio albums and two live albums. Don’t be startled by the singer’s new look since his last visit to Des Moines (he shaved his beard and cut his hair short in December 2011), he’s still the reggae superstar we love. The Dirty Heads (“Lay Me Down,” “Spread Too Thin”) will open the show. Doors open at 6 p.m. Show starts at 7 p.m. $30 at ticketfly.com.
Urban Assault

Sunday: Grab your bikes, your buds and some beers for the Urban Assault Ride, a bicycle obstacle event hosted in a handful of large (and fun) cities across the nation. Des Moines’ debut in 20120 was the biggest inaugural ride in the event’s history. There also are rides in Austin, Chicago, Fort Collins and other cities. To participate, choose a teammate and set out on a citywide quest to checkpoints. Each checkpoint includes a silly obstacle for riders to complete before proceeding to the next.
"Some Like It Hot"

Thursday: Bring your picnics, lawn chairs and blankets to the Des Moines Art Center’s lawn for another evening of Free Flicks, the center’s monthly outdoor movie event. This week, “Some Like it Hot,” will be played over the projector. If you haven’t seen the comedy, starring Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe, mark your calendars! In addition to the film, a Marilyn Monroe look-a-like contest will be held at 7 p.m., just before the movie begins — so wear your wigs and pencil in those beauty marks. Film begins at dusk. Free. Des Moines Art Center, 4700 Grand Ave. Go to des moinesartcenter.org.

Possibly best known for his success as a songwriter in the early ’70s (“Me and Bobby McGee,” “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,” “For The Good Times”) Kristofferson has continued to collaborate, record and tour over the years. Unlike a scripted show, the audience suggests ideas for scenes, short skits or complete plays — performed instantly in front of the audience — meaning no two shows are ever the same. 7:30 p.m. both nights. Tickets are $15 per day at ticketmaster.com, or $25 for both nights. Civic Center’s Stoner Theater, 221 Walnut St. Go to civiccenter.org.

Saturday: Eating while you run, bike and swim? It sounds crazy, but don’t write it off as a bad idea just yet. Devour Des Moines, an eating triathlon event organized to raise awareness for buying local food and living an active lifestyle, encourages you to “tri to eat it all” this Saturday.

Story Mob

Thursday: Story Mob is like a flash mob, except when these people get together, a story breaks out, not a coordinated dance. The event is an evening of five-minute stories (held four times a year), with three guest judges, two cash prizes ($100 for first, $50 for second) and one required story prop. Participants are judged on their ability to incorporate a story prop (a lunch box, a cassette tape, a pair of shoes or a suitcase) into either a non-fiction or fiction format. Watch multiple bursts of 5-minute organized chaos starting at 7 p.m. at Ritual Cafe, 1301 Locust St. Go to desmoinessocialclub.org for more info.

Critical Mass

Friday: A party ride held the last Friday of each month throughout the summer, Critical Mass is a bike ride that boasts no established route, but plenty of surprises. The event is an organized ride that is held in more than 300 cities worldwide on the last Friday of the month, and was originally founded in 1992 in San Francisco. The point of the ride is to enjoy the city and its establishments by traveling as a group and voting on the next stop. The ride will start in front of the Iowa State Capitol, East Ninth Street and East Grand Avenue, at 6:30 p.m. Go to bikeiowa.com for more info.

In 2009, however, his career took a turn when he was recognized for his vocal abilities and signed to Def Jam Recordings, releasing his debut single, “Birthday Sex,” shortly afterward. His most recent album, “All About You,” was released in 2010. Doors open at 7 p.m. Show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance at ticketfly.com, $25 at the door.
Jorts Pub Crawl

Saturday: We’ve all worn them at some point in our lives. Jorts. That awesome creation of shorts made out of old jeans that shrunk a little too short, or the hole in the knee became a little too big. This weekend, the organizers of the Jorts Bar Crawl encourage you to dig out those old statement makers (or hell, create a new pair) and wear them with pride. The pub crawl is a fundraiser for “Team Sam,” a local with Cystic Fibrosis who takes 25 pills a day and two inhalants (she does this all while playing soccer and volleyball, singing in choir and going to school). The proceeds from the event will go toward the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to help all with the disease. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. DART will detour its D-Line and extend the shuttle’s hours to accommodate event-goers.
Jess' top events June 20-26

Looking for something to do this week? Music, a "practice" Oktoberfest in June, racing and a store warming party are good starts. Here are the details:

Korn

Friday: Korn, that hard rock band from Bakersfield you listened to in high school, is still making hits. They’ll stop by the Val Air Ballroom this weekend. Their most recent album, “The Path of Totality,” won Album of the Year at the 2012 Revolver Golden Gods Awards. Doors open at 7 p.m. Show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $35 in advance at the Val Air box office or at Ticketmaster.com, or $40 at the door. Val Air Ballroom, 301 Ashworth Road, West Des Moines.

Oktoberfest Practice Party

Friday and Saturday: Oktoberfest in Germany has featured the biergarten for 200 years. Just imagine how much beer has been consumed at Oktoberfest during that timespan. To celebrate the anniversary, Paulaner Brewery and the City of Munich have developed a traveling 480-seat Biergarten, authentic to those used at Oktoberfest, which will stop in Des Moines. The Oktoberfest Practice Party will set up in the parking lot south of Buzzard Billy’s, on Third Street, and will feature live music from 7 to 11 p.m. each night (FreeStyle on Friday, Truth Be Told on Saturday), food and, of course, beer. No cover. 4 p.m.-1 a.m. both nights. Buzzard Billy’s, 615 Third St.

Hill Vintage & Knits store warming party

Saturday: It all started with a traveling camper named Heidi, filled with vintage finds from estate sales, garage sales and thrift stores. A year later, Erica Carnes and Jessica Miller are opening Hill Vintage & Knits, a vintage store with men’s and women’s clothing, as well as yarn and notions, they’ve collected from searching nooks and crannies across the country. Celebrate the opening with music from DJ Eight Ten of Pressure Drop, plus snacks and booze at the store, starting at 4 p.m. The store opens for business at 11 a.m. Friday morning, so you can stop in early for a sneak peak at the goods. Free to attend. Hill Vintage & Knits, 432 E. Locust St.

Iowa Corn Indy

Saturday: Start your engines. The annual Iowa Corn Indy, one of the Newton Speedway’s most popular races, will send Indy Car drivers zipping around the Central Iowa track this weekend. The race starts at 8 p.m., with a couple races (The Pizza Ranch 100 Star Mazda Series at 4:15 p.m. and the Sukup 100 Firestone Indy Lights Series at 5:40 p.m.) proceeding the main event. Tickets are $50 and $60. Iowa Speedway, 3333 Rusty Wallace Drive, Newton. Go to iowaspeedway.com.

Girl Talk

Monday: Kick your week off with a show featuring mash-up artist Girl Talk. The previous 80/35 headliner will perform a solo show in West Des Moines, sure to be complete with toilet paper streamers and plenty of bass. Doors open at 7 p.m. Show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance at the Val Air box office or Ticketmaster.com, or $30 at the door. Val Air Ballroom, 301 Ashworth Road, West Des Moines

Father's Day is just around the corner (ahem, June 17), and Sbrocco is planning a Steers and Beers dinner just for him. You know what he wants - Brisket. Ribeye. Oxtail stew (well, maybe he doesn't know he wants Oxtail stew. But he does, trust me).

Chef Andrew Meek will prepare the four-course dinner, paired with Boulevard brews, on Wednesday, June 13. Make your reservation fast, since Sbrocco's dinners fill up fast. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. with a reception, dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Tickets are $55 per person, or $100 for two. Here's the menu:

Saturday: Americana turns one year old on May 19, and to celebrate, the swank restaurant and bar is hosting a prom-style dance. Prom starts at 10 p.m., and will feature DJ 2-4-8 and Phase Two. Enjoy spiked punch, dancing and a prom photo booth, and enter to be crowned prom King or Queen (the best prom attire will win). Free admission. Americana, 1312 Locust St.

See the Rooster's

Saturday: The Roosters, Des Moines’ Australian football club, will play its first home games against the Kansas City Power and the Ohio Valley River Rats this weekend. The Roosters formed in 2009, and play Australian rules football, which is a totally different game than the American version . The objective is to score points by passing the ball through a goal, usually by kicking. Players can use any part of their body to move the ball, and must touch or bounce the ball on the ground intermittently. The players cannot throw the ball. There are too many rules to list here, so check out the game this weekend. First game starts at noon, last game starts at 2 p.m. The games will be followed by a post-game celebration at the Royal Mile at 5 p.m. The game is at Stilwell Junior High School, 1601 Vine St., West Des Moines.
Saturday: Sleepy Hollow Sports Park now sits where an Indian Village used to thrive in the late 1800s. This year, the park is hosting four races to “celebrate the spirit” of the village, with themes centered around the elements of each season. The first race, The Kosama Mud Run, will celebrate Earth with, well, mud. Run, crawl and fall in mud (and try not to get stuck), then enjoy a few beers in your filthy clothes to celebrate your accomplishment. Sign up for one race, or all four (more races are posted on the website). If you don’t want to get dirty (sissy!) you can watch the fun happen on the sidelines. 9 a.m. $45 per racer. Free for spectators. Sleepy Hollow Sports Park, 4051 Dean Ave. Go to sleepyhollowrace place.com.
