Best restaurants for vegetarians
It's not always easy to be vegetarian in pork-lovin' country, but I've found several places that make it easy to order sans meat.

1
A Dong -
1511 High St. - Des Moines (Downtown)
Report this commentA Dong has a whole separate menu of vegetarian items, from spring rolls to noodle soups to more exotic curries and hot pots. Prices are very affordable.

2
Java Joes Coffee House -
214 Fourth St. - Des Moines (Court Avenue District)
Report this commentSometimes I forget they serve full meals here in addition to coffee and pastries, and many of those dishes (at least half the menu) are vegetarian.

Ritual Cafe -
1301 Locust St., Suite D - Des Moines (Downtown)
Report this commentDes Moines' only all-vegetarian restaurant serves panini sandwiches, a tasty hummus plate and lots of vegan baked goods. Drinks are wonderful, as well.

Mr. Filet Steakhouse -
510 Seventh St. - Des Moines (Downtown)
Report this commentNo, this is not a mistake. I thought I'd be screwed eating lunch at Mr. Filet, but the owner said he could whip me up a vegetarian gyro with grilled peppers and onions, more veggies and feta cheese. It was delicious!

Gateway Market and Cafe -
2002 Woodland Ave. - Des Moines (Downtown)
Report this commentThe vegetarian pad thai is delicious and can also be made vegan. I also tried the house ramen with tofu one day and thought it was one of the most soothing soups in town. Just be sure to be clear about what you're ordering - service is not the best.

Big Tomato Pizza -
2613 Ingersoll Ave. - Des Moines (Ingersoll Avenue)
Report this commentIf you're tired of having one choice - the vegetarian - as far as pizza toppings (and especially if you're like me and don't like mushrooms or black olives) you'll love all the crazy topping choices here, from Doritos to every veggie under the sun. Love the honey-wheat crust, too!

El Aguila Real Mexican -
3520 Beaver Ave. - Des Moines (Beaverdale)
Report this commentMexican restaurants are usually great places to eat vegetarian because they have separate menu items and can often substitute beans for many of their dishes. I like El Aguila especially because they have potato enchiladas and potato-stuffed peppers that are fantastic.

Tandoor -
1121 Eighth St. - West Des Moines (Des Moines Metro)
Report this commentA full section of vegetarian dishes, with an extra kick of fiery spices. Cool it off with a lassi (I like the plain ones) a side of raita, and rice pudding.

India Star -
5514 Douglas Ave. - Des Moines (Des Moines Metro)
Report this commentBonus points for being really close to where I live and having a great lunch buffet. Potato/pea samosas are excellent, as are a full selection of veggie dishes. My boyfriend looooves the Sag Paneer.

Thai Flavors -
757 N. Ankeny Blvd. - Ankeny (Des Moines Metro)
Report this commentJust about any dish can be made with tofu or extra vegetables, and vegetarian spring rolls are available. I usually go for the ka phrao or masaman curry.

Gyros!
I love everything about gyros! The Des Moines metropolitan area is not filled with Greek restaurants like some larger metro areas, but these are a few of my favorites.
